In-Competition vs Out-of-Competition Testing
In-competition and out-of-competition testing are the two anti-doping collection regimes, differing in which substances are prohibited, how much notice is given, and what a negative result can support.
Under the World Anti-Doping Code the in-competition period runs from just before midnight on the day preceding a competition through the end of sample collection for it, unless a federation has an alternative period approved by WADA. Everything else is out-of-competition, collected with no advance notice, which is why athletes in registered testing pools file whereabouts information; three filing failures or missed tests within twelve months is itself a violation.
The Prohibited List is split along the same seam. Some classes are prohibited at all times and others only in competition. Peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics fall in the at-all-times group, as do anabolic agents and hormone modulators; stimulants, narcotics and glucocorticoids by certain routes are in-competition only. A therapeutic use exemption may cover a listed substance, and its scope tracks the same distinction.
This determines what a clean sample proves, which is narrower than most readers assume. A negative in-competition test speaks to a window measured in days for many substances, and for peptide agents the detection window can be hours while the physiological effect persists far longer. Out-of-competition testing exists because that gap between effect duration and detectability is the whole problem, and the biological passport because even unannounced collection cannot always close it.
Two inferences fail routinely. The first treats a season of negative in-competition results as evidence of non-use, when the sampling design could never support that claim. The second reads the in-competition-only categories as though they described a permitted period for everything else; for the peptide classes the timing question does not arise, because those substances are prohibited continuously.
