Beyond-Use Date (BUD)
A beyond-use date is the point after which a compounded or opened preparation should no longer be used, and it is set by microbial and in-use risk rather than by the manufacturer's stability data.
A beyond-use date and an expiration date answer different questions. An expiration date belongs to an unopened, manufacturer-packaged product and rests on formal stability testing under defined storage conditions. A beyond-use date applies from the moment a container is opened, punctured or compounded, and is dominated by the risk of microbial ingress. That is why it is nearly always shorter, often dramatically so, than the expiry printed on the same vial.
In United States practice the framework is compendial. The chapter governing sterile compounding assigns beyond-use dates by category and by the environment in which the preparation was made, treating immediate-use, segregated and cleanroom compounding very differently, and permitting preserved preparations longer in-use periods than preservative-free ones. Approved products carry their own in-use statements determined by the sponsor and printed in the labelling.
The concept separates two failure modes that look alike. A preparation past its beyond-use date is not necessarily degraded; it is one whose sterility assurance can no longer be justified, and a contaminated preparation looks, smells and assays exactly like a clean one. Conversely, a badly stored preparation can fail chemically well inside its beyond-use date, so the date is a ceiling rather than a warranty.
The recurring error is arithmetic optimism: taking long-term stability generated on sealed vials and applying it to a punctured container, or assuming refrigeration extends a beyond-use date indefinitely. Cold slows chemical degradation and slows but does not stop microbial growth, and several organisms of concern grow at refrigerator temperature. Grey-market sources compound this by quoting stability of a dry powder as though it applied to a solution.
