Sports Supplement Contamination

Sports supplement contamination is the presence of undeclared prohibited substances in a nutritional product, a common route to an anti-doping violation under the strict liability principle.

Sports supplement contamination is the presence in a nutritional product of a substance not stated on the label, which in the anti-doping context usually means a prohibited agent. It arises through several mechanisms that are worth keeping apart: cross-contamination in shared manufacturing equipment, contaminated raw ingredients, deliberate spiking to make a product work, and undeclared use of a compound the seller believes is unregulated. Only the first is accidental in any meaningful sense.

The scale was established by a study conducted for the International Olympic Committee at the Cologne laboratory, which analysed 634 supplements purchased in thirteen countries and found that around fifteen percent contained anabolic androgenic steroids that appeared nowhere on the label. Later surveys of products marketed with peptide and growth-factor claims have similarly found undeclared actives. Under the dietary supplement framework in the United States, products are not approved before sale and the manufacturer, not a regulator, is responsible for confirming what is in them.

The reason this becomes decisive rather than unfortunate is strict liability. An athlete is responsible for what is found in their sample regardless of intent, so a contaminated product produces a violation on the same footing as deliberate use. Establishing the supplement as the source mitigates the sanction only with analytical proof from the sealed lot, which is rarely obtainable after the fact.

The misreading to avoid is that a batch-certification scheme removes the risk. Such schemes test a sample of lots against a defined panel and reduce exposure substantially, but they cover the panel they cover, they test lots rather than every unit, and certification of one product line says nothing about others sharing the same production equipment.
